Using foil-based primary drug containers has always been at the heart of CHI’s DPI development ethos. This is because foil blisters provide many advantages for storing dry powder formulations through the product’s shelf life. Primarily, they provide a simple, near-perfect barrier against moisture ingress; this is particularly important for moisture-sensitive formulations like biologics which require the most extreme level of protection.
At CHI we believe it’s important to make sure we’re developing our DPI portfolio in a way that balances rapid innovation, deep scientific understanding, and considered experimentation. This includes quickly arriving at device embodiments which are as representative as possible of the final device. Testing device performance using representative blister materials and processes is key to effective de-risking of our inhalers’ performance before committing to scale-up. This is why we commissioned bespoke laboratory equipment which allow us to form, fill, seal and finish foil blisters that are suitable for all of our platforms. This directly supports our in-house development testing while the principles and specifications can be transferred to our partners seeking to establish a blistering capability to support clinical batch manufacture.
